According to statistics released by SunWiz,an Australian photovoltaic and energy storage market analysis firm, the sales of rooftop photovoltaics in Australia decreased by 14%in June compared to May.
Australia added 248MW of rooftop photovoltaic system installed capacity in June, far lower than the 288MW in May,which was the fourth highest month on record for the country’s Small Scale Technology Certificate(STC)photovoltaic market.Although the newly added rooftop photovoltaic installed capacity in Australia in June was higher than the installed capacity in June of the past two years,it was lower than the installed capacity in June 2021.
Despite some decline, sales of rooftop photovoltaic systems so far this year are still 6%higher than last year, but Warwick Johnston,General Manager of SunWiz,stated that these numbers mask a worrying trend.
Johnston said,”The Australian rooftop photovoltaic installation market seems to be developing smoothly, but the hidden fact is that the market is going downhill. This is a continuously declining market, and trading volume is decreasing. If combined with the continuous decrease in photovoltaic system prices, investment in the industry will definitely decrease
He stated that recent analysis suggests that the weak trend in the rooftop photovoltaic market towards potential customers, proposals, and sales demand seems to have been reflected in the system registration.
He said,”All signs indicate that users are more cautious in their spending, and they take much longer to decide to purchase rooftop photovoltaic systems. When they decide to buy, they are more inclined to choose those affordable rooftop photovoltaic systems, which have reduced in scale and price compared to the past
Johnston pointed out that the decrease in installed capacity and prices of rooftop photovoltaic systems in Australia means that the total market revenue is declining, and photovoltaic system retailers are facing increasing pressure.
He said,”Although there are not many rooftop photovoltaic system retailers currently exiting the market,it can be confirmed that some companies are exiting this market. Some companies are starting to take layoffs. However,as new companies enter the photovoltaic market, the number of retailers remains basically unchanged
In June 2024,sales of rooftop photovoltaic systems in all states of Australia declined, with Queensland performing well among the states, experiencing a 12%decrease compared to the previous month.South Australia decreased by 21%,Victoria decreased by 15%,and New South Wales decreased by 14%.The installed capacity of rooftop photovoltaic systems in Western Australia and Tasmania has both decreased by 18%,while the installation in the Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory has decreased by 11%.
In June 2024,the Australian residential rooftop photovoltaic market was severely impacted, with only the 50kW to 75kW segment achieving growth. The total volume of segmented markets below 3kW and 4kW to 6kW decreased by 4%and 3%respectively,while the segmented markets of 6kW to 8kW and 10kW to 15kW decreased by 20%and 15%respectively,partly due to affordability issues.
