On January 25th, the National Energy Administration held a press conference to introduce the development of new energy storage in China in 2023, the construction of a unified national electricity market system, the background of the establishment of International Clean Energy Day, and China’s contribution to global clean energy development, and answered questions from reporters. According to Bian Guangqi, Deputy Director of the Energy Conservation and Technology Equipment Department, new energy storage technologies are constantly emerging, and the technology roadmap is flourishing. Lithium ion battery energy storage still occupies an absolute dominant position, with rapid development of technologies such as compressed air energy storage, liquid flow battery energy storage, and flywheel energy storage. Since 2023, multiple 300 MW level compressed air energy storage projects, 100 MW level liquid flow battery energy storage projects, and MW level flywheel energy storage projects have started construction, and new technologies such as gravity energy storage, liquid air energy storage, and carbon dioxide energy storage have been implemented, presenting an overall diversified development trend.
As of the end of 2023, the proportion of lithium-ion battery energy storage that has been put into operation is 97.4%, lead carbon battery energy storage accounts for 0.5%, compressed air energy storage accounts for 0.5%, liquid flow battery energy storage accounts for 0.4%, and other new energy storage technologies account for 1.2%.
